The Tour de France champion and Gold medalist in the London Olympic Games of 2012 in the time trial for Great Britain Bradley Wiggins has accepted that fellow British cyclist and his team mate at Team Sky Mark Cavendish might have to leave the team in order to fulfill his personal ambitions.
Cavendish was part of the Team Sky lineup that helped Wiggins to cross the line in first place and create history as the first British champion in the famous Grand Tour earlier in the summer.
However, he was left extremely frustrated by his own ambitions being unfulfilled. The Manxman, who was the winner of the Green Jersey as the top sprinter last year was limited to just three stage wins at the Tour de France as the orders of the team took priority. Mark Cavendish still has another two and a half years left on his lucrative contract with Team Sky; however, if the reports are to be believed, the 27 year old is looking for a way out of the team.
And Wiggins, who enjoys a close friendship with his fellow Englishman, stated that on a personal level, riding with him has been a brilliant experience for him this year, adding that he also enjoys his company before stating that he understands why he might have to leave the team. He also added that he loves to see his friend winning races but having to see him contend for the Green Jersey was reason enough for him to want to leave the team.
Wiggins also added that Team Sky has set a precedent now and in order to be the dominant force in the Grand Tours, the team has to concentrate on the General Classification. He mentioned that the Tour de France showed that the two didn’t go together and it might just push Mark Cavendish out.
